We all love adventure, but in my opinion, Percy Jackson might be one of the only people not to want any quests at all. "The Sea of Monsters", written in 2006, is the second book in Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympian series. I will be reviewing it and telling you what I think of it!
The action takes place one year after the first book's (The Lightning Thief) events. We see Percy Jackson, our main character, and it's the last day of school. And this means that Percy will go back to camp Half-Blood in just a few days!
Camp Half-Blood, as mentioned in one of my previous reviews, is a campsite for demigods, sons and daughters of the Greek gods. Percy is a demigod himself and is the son of Poseidon, the god of water.
The boy meets a new friend called Tyson, who turns out to be a significant figure later in the story. We also see Annabeth, ready to take Percy to the special camp. Upon arrival, the situation in the Half-Blood campsite turned dire. The place was getting attacked! Why? A pine tree called Thalia, which holds a protection barrier around the camp to keep the inhabitants safe, is dying.
The story behind the protective tree is exciting and tragic at the same time. Thalia and the other demigods, one of them being Annabeth, were trying to make it to camp Half-Blood. At the same time, cyclopes were chasing the group! Thalia sacrificed herself to let others live. Zeus, Thalia's father and the most important god on the Olymp, turned his daughter into a tree to give her a chance to live, and also, to protect the camp.
To save the pine, there is a quest to find the golden fleece, a magical item in Greek mythology. This golden thread is the only item that can save Thalia. Will Percy be able to get the necessary yarn, or will things take an unexpected turn for the worse?
Overall, I enjoyed this book. The Lightning Thief left me curious and wanting more of the Percy Jackson series, so I was very excited to delve into The Sea Of Monsters. I enjoy adventure and humour books, and The Sea Of Monsters provided me with both of those. It had the characters that you've met in the first book, and new ones as well. The characters that the readers have met in the first book were all very well-developed in this sequel! The Sea of Monsters held up to the standards set in The Lightning Thief, and I can't wait to review the next book! The Sea Of Monsters by Rick Riordan is perfect for those who love adventure and a tad bit of humour from time to time.
My rating is five out of five.
