Drops - App review, by Chzhen Maria

Bonjour, amigos. My name is Maria and today I would like to make a review for Drops, the language learning app. This article is not sponsored, but Drops, I am always down for business .

Drops is an app that can help you learn vocabulary words of 33 languages in the world created both for iOS and Android devices. I, personally, bought a yearly membership. It is approximately 50$ per year, and there is also the lifetime purchase for 250$. It is up to you to decide if you want to have the free version with 5 minutes per every 9 hours or an unlimited time of learning without any ads and being able to do so offline.

The app is very beautifully designed for both iOS and Android devices. It is aesthetically pleasing and I sometimes go here just for the sake of enjoying aesthetics. You gotta please your inner perfectionist too, you know? It is structured simply, yet effectively. As you can see, I am learning French and in the top left corner I can see the amount of words I have learned. The topic on the top is the last one you learned. Just jump right into it and continue learning at once. When you scroll down, all other topics appear with an animation and a different colour. They are not in a random order. They go in topics. On the "cards", I can see if I ever opened it and learned anything.

As you might have noticed, the app is really only focused on vocabulary and no grammar. There are definitely phrases and sentences that you might need to use such as: "It is raining", "it is sunny", "you are welcome", etc. But there isn't really grammar here like practice of passe compose (French grammar) or Present Perfect (English grammar). It is just to warn you that if you would like an app that can teach a whole language from level noob to level 100, then you shouldn't make Drops your only source of information.

To ensure that you learn everything 100%, the app has something called Dojo. Dojo is an algorithm created to help people memorise words that they seem to struggle with. Of course, this wouldn't be a language app review if I didn't show you how the app teaches. There is True/False exercises, Multiple choice, word mazes, an exercise where you tap on the words' syllables to put it in place. For Pro users there is also the listening exercise available. As I read from the Drops blog, they studied the vocabulary learning for eleven years and developed a formula that can actually help you study any language without feeling that it is a drag or that you suddenly would like to take a nap.

As a conclusion: the app is worth trying out. I suggest you try using the free version first and see. Some people might have a lifestyle that just doesn't really leave them time to study a lot. Along with it, do not forget about traditional techniques of studying a language like listening to a video, reading a book in the language, talk to natives or just people who know the language, have a tutor that you can go to that lives in your area. Drops is a cherry on the top.
