Today, I am going to talk about Michelle Obama's book called Becoming. During the past few years, this memoir became a global phenomenon. I see it everywhere! In Harvard's bookstore, in the local bookstores, in the libraries, even in our school's newspaper. Obviously, this has sparked some interest on my behalf. So here we are!
Becoming is a memoir written by Michelle Obama nee Robinson after Barack Obama's (ever heard of him?) presidency came to an end. It describes almost everything that has happened in her life - from early childhood in a quite poor part of Chicago to becoming the first African-American First Lady of the United States. I would like to give you some highlights of what shaped Michelle Obama as a person and how she got where she is and was.
Michelle Robinson was born in 1964 in the South side of Chicago. She always tried the hardest in school and not fruitlessly: she did get to Princeton, and later to the Harvard Law School. Her parents played a huge role in the formation of her character. I have noticed a trend with memoirs of all these amazing, inspiring people: parents play huge roles in forming the character of a person.
Anyways, continuing. Always being an overachiever, Michelle went to work in a law firm where she met a summer recruit called... yep, Barack Obama. As the years went on, they married and had kids. Michelle founded and worked in several organizations and in the University of Chicago. Barack, meanwhile, became the senator for Illinois and after that, his politics career just exploded. I mean, people would ask him if he were running for president just looking at how good of a politician he was. The Obama family started thinking of it too. The rest is history - Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States for 2 terms.
Michelle has a lot of things to share from her point of view. Although she definitely wasn't as busy as her husband, she was still an activist who opened several organizations and used her platform to help make child obesity a less common thing in the US and actively supported military families.
This book is wonderful. After reading it, I feel as if Michelle Obama is a close friend of mine who is also a role model. It is an amazing combination of these two. So, whether you are looking for a book to get inspired by or just for an interesting read, Becoming is your number 1 choice.
