The Help

This article is about the book by Kathryn Stockett called The Help. It was written in 2009 but the setting takes place in early 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi. The Help is told primarily from the first-person perspective of three women - Aibileen Clark, Minny Jackson and Eugenia (nickname: "Skeeter") Phelan. Aibileen and Minny work for white people. Aibileen is a maid who takes care of children. Her own son died because of an accident. In the story she looks after Mae Mobley, a quite small child who has a racist teacher.

Minny is Aibileen's friend who frequently tells her employers what she thinks of them. As a result, she has been fired 19 times. During the time of the setting she works for Miss Celia, a White woman. She is shown as an alcoholic who was trying to have kids at the same time. She is actually a very unique character, in my opinion.

Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan is a woman who has graduated the University of Mississippi. During her stay there, she has her maid, the woman who raised her and cared for her, Constantine write to her. One day, Constantine writes about the exciting news Eugenia will hear when she gets back to Jackson, the town. That was the last ever letter from Constantine. It is quite a dark secret why Eugenia's mother fired Constantine. In the end, many things are revealed though. Back to the plot- Eugenia's mother wants her to marry somebody and thinks that the graduation diploma is just a pretty piece of paper. Eugenia is a very tall woman, 180 cm, so not many men are willing to marry her. She has a lot of free time because she writes articles for a magazine. Looking at the way her maid, Constantine was treated, Eugenia realizes that Black women are being treated differently than White women by a lot. Conveniently, her friend Elaine Stein wants her to write something unique. Eugenia decides to interview all Black women in the town and write a book about their life. Anonymously, of course, but the chances are high that someone in the town will notice the similarity between the characters and themselves, which would make it a very dangerous situation for both Eugenia and the maids that helped her. It was quite illegal back then to write about such a thing. The book she wrote would be called The Help.

The idea of "The Help" actually works out, though I am not telling you the reaction of Jackson people when they all actually find out about this idea.

The book is about racism, that is for sure. I noticed that my previous 4 videos are about either racism or Alzheimer's disease. I didn't research special books or movies about these 2 topics. They just came to me. Also, thanks to ed9053 who recommended me to read The Help, it was amazing. Thank you! Both of those are big problems for humanity and we need to solve these problems fast.
